Liposuction is one of the two most requested Plastic Surgical procedures that Dr. Amy Bandy see’s in her Newport Beach and Torrance California offices. Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, liposculpting or body contouring, is best performed on people who are at or near their ideal weight, and who have specific stubborn areas of excess fat that they want removed. The skin ideally should be smooth and elastic to get the best results.
Liposuction is performed using a suction machine that is attached to a small stainless steel instrument called a cannulae. Through strategically placed small incisions, the cannulae is inserted into fatty areas between skin and muscle. Here it is gently moved back and forth as it removes the excess unwanted fat. The surgeon will mark the patient in the areas where the fat is to be removed, and then during the procedure, will feather the surrounding areas to obtain a smooth result. By using small cannulae’s with multiple small holes, very small amounts of fat are suctioned on each pass of the cannulae. This results in a smoother, improved body contour.
The length of the procedure will vary with the amount of fat needing removal varies from patient to patient and varies for each body site.
When having your surgery on a outpatient basis, the maximum aspirate that will be removed is 5 liters. When larger volume liposuction is anticipated, hospitalization is typically necessary.
There are several types of liposuction procedures:
Tumescent or “Super Wet” Liposuction
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction
